Final Fantasy VII is a landmark Role-Playing Game (RPG) from 1997 set in a post-modern world where technology clashes with fantasy. You play as Cloud Strife, an ex-soldier joining AVALANCHE to fight the Shinra corporation draining the planet's life energy. Gameplay features strategic, turn-based combat with an Active Time Element, and the core mechanic is the customizable Materia system, which dictates character abilities. Players explore 3D environments, utilize unique Limit Breaks, and progress through a complex narrative involving ecological conflict and personal history. The game is known for its deep customization and world exploration unlocked via various vehicles.
The narrative centers on Cloud Strife, a former elite soldier who becomes entangled with AVALANCHE, a resistance group dedicated to opposing the monolithic Shinra Electric Power Company. Shinra is systematically draining the planet's vital life energy, known as Mako, to fuel its technological dominance. Initially motivated by personal gain and a promise made to a childhood friend, Cloud soon finds himself at the heart of a struggle to save the world from ecological collapse and a looming, mysterious threat embodied by his nemesis, Sephiroth.
The gameplay loop combines exploration across detailed 3D environments with strategic combat. Combat utilizes a turn-based system enhanced by an Active Time Element, requiring players to manage timing alongside tactical decisions. A defining feature of the experience is the highly customizable Materia system. This mechanic allows players to slot magical or ability-granting orbs into their equipment, fundamentally shaping character skills, spells, and passive enhancements throughout the journey.
Furthermore, each character possesses unique, powerful finishing moves known as Limit Breaks, which charge up through taking damage in battle. As the story progresses, players gain access to various vehicles, opening up the world map for extensive exploration and the discovery of hidden content.
The game's distinctiveness lies in its fusion of high-concept science fiction with classic fantasy tropes, creating a memorable world unlike many of its contemporaries. The deep customization offered by the Materia system ensures that players can tailor their party's capabilities extensively. Beyond the main quest, the experience is rounded out by numerous optional activities and mini-games scattered throughout the world.
This main title does not feature any official downloadable content (DLC) or expansions released for the original version. It has seen subsequent remakes developed by the publisher.
Progression is tied not only to character leveling but also to the strategic integration of Materia. Discovering new areas often requires utilizing different modes of transportation, encouraging players to revisit previously explored locations to unlock new paths and secrets.

A modern reimagining of one of the most iconic games of all time, Final Fantasy VII Remake harnesses the very latest technology to recreate and expand Square Enix's legendary RPG adventure for the current generation. Set in a post-industrial fantasy world that has fallen under the control of the shadowy Shinra Electric Power Company, take on the role of Cloud Strife - a mercenary and former member of Shinra's elite Soldier unit - and team up with anti-Shinra organization Avalanche as they step-up their resistance.

The PC version of Final Fantasy VII is based on an unfinished build of the Japanese version, and therefore contains the same bugs. It featured a midi soundtrack and the FMV were in lower resolutions. This PC version would end up providing the source code for subsequent ports.

Final Fantasy VII International is a direct port of the North American version, including all of its gameplay and storyline tweaks. It came with an extra fourth disc that includes bonus background information about the game itself.
