As a classic 1997 Real-Time Strategy game, you build and manage a subterranean lair, using a disembodied hand cursor to dig, construct rooms (Lairs, Treasury), and command your Imp workforce. The core loop involves defending your Dungeon Heart from invading heroes by cultivating a unique monster ecology and managing resources. A distinctive feature is the ability to possess any creature, switching the view to first-person combat. The objective is to conquer the surface world region by region.
The hand also serves a direct tactical purpose. Players can physically pick up creatures and objects, allowing for strategic deployment, such as dropping an entire assault force onto an enemy foothold. Furthermore, the hand can "slap" entities; this action speeds up work rates for minions like the basic Imps, though it comes at the cost of their health and happiness.
The dungeon map is a grid, much of which is initially hidden by unexplored earth. Imps, the generic workforce, are responsible for digging tunnels, mining resources, setting traps, and defending the lair. As the player progresses, they unlock new rooms and creatures through a technology tree, deepening the complexity of the dungeon's ecology, where certain monsters may be natural rivals.
The ultimate goal of each level typically involves either eliminating all invading heroic forces or destroying all other Dungeon Keepers present in the region. The player's connection to the world is anchored by the Dungeon Heart; if this critical structure is destroyed, the level is lost.
