Released in 2020, Dreams is a unique main game for PlayStation platforms that functions as a creative sandbox and exploration hub. The core gameplay involves using intuitive tools to build and share original content—including games, music, and animations—within the shared "Dreamiverse." Players can also spend endless hours exploring the vast library of user-created experiences. Its distinctive feature is integrating a comprehensive creation suite directly with a perpetually growing catalog of community-made adventures.
Conversely, players can navigate the "Dreamiverse," which is populated by the community's output. This results in a perpetually evolving catalog of experiences, ensuring a constant influx of novel content spanning diverse genres, including adventure, platforming, and interactive art.
The distinctive feature of this environment is the seamless integration of a robust creation suite with an expansive, explorable repository of community-made works. It serves simultaneously as a development toolset and a platform for content consumption. A notable aspect is that assets, music, and animations developed within the system can, under specific terms, be utilized externally for both personal and commercial endeavors.
As a main title, the foundational creative and exploratory experience is complete. The ecosystem has seen continued support through the release of additional downloadable content packs since its launch, which typically introduce expanded toolsets, new assets, or feature enhancements to the creation environment.
The overarching atmosphere is deliberately fluid and surreal, designed to unify the wide variety of user creations under a cohesive, dreamlike aesthetic. While the content itself covers every imaginable genre, the underlying environment promotes a sense of limitless potential, reflecting the often non-linear nature of dreams.
Users can sculpt detailed 3D assets, compose original music, design complex game mechanics, and produce short films or animations, all using the integrated development tools.

This update to Dreams included a new game and an overhaul of the creation experience. Media Molecule released "Ancient Dangers: A Bat's Tale", a dungeon-crawling action game featuring orcs and new PlayStation trophies. It couldn't be played in VR, but was one of the few Dreams creations that supported local co-op. Templates were released that allowed people to quickly created themed dreams. These included mini golf courses, speedrun challenges, 2D platformers, shmups, and a fully featured toolkit to modify their dungeon-crawling game into something new.

This major update introduced virtual reality to Dreams. Media Molecule released a new collection of short games called "Inside the Box", which included an art gallery, motion-controlled maze puzzles, a speedrun shooter and a puzzle platformer. Users could design their own creations using a Playstation VR headset and optional Playstation Move controllers. Most dreams could be played in VR, even if they weren't created in it.
