As a main game released in 2008, Devil May Cry 4 is a hack and slash adventure where you engage in high-octane, stylish combat across gothic, supernatural locales. The core loop involves chaining non-stop combos using various weapons. Its distinctive feature is the introduction of the protagonist Nero, whose powerful "Devil Bringer" arm adds unique grappling and tactical depth to the explosive fighting system, contrasting with the established hero's style.
The gameplay loop emphasizes high-octane, combo-driven action. Players engage in fast-paced encounters, utilizing a variety of weapons and unique demonic abilities to dispatch hordes of enemies. Success in combat is often measured by style and execution, encouraging players to chain together long, intricate attack sequences.
The game introduces a new leading man who possesses a distinct set of abilities that fundamentally alter the combat flow. A central mechanic involves his powerful, demonic right arm, referred to as the "Devil Bringer". This feature allows for unique grappling, grabbing, and environmental interaction during combat, adding a layer of tactical depth to the standard hack and slash formula.
The story kicks off when the established hero of the series is implicated in a major incident involving the assassination of the Order of the Sword's leader. Players alternate control between this established character and the newcomer, Nero. Nero, who harbors his own latent demonic powers, embarks on a quest that forces him into conflict with the very hero he once admired, all while uncovering the secrets behind the Order and the source of his own abilities.
The defining feature of this installment is the integration of the new protagonist’s unique arm mechanic alongside the established, fluid combat system. This duality allows for varied playstyles depending on which character is currently controlled. The action is designed to be dynamic, combining explosive fighting options with intricate movement and aerial maneuvers.
As a main release title, this game does not feature any downloadable content (DLC) or official expansions. There are no remakes or remasters currently associated with this specific 2008 version.
The atmosphere is characterized by a blend of dark fantasy and high-stakes supernatural adventure. Devil May Cry 4 Refrain is a port of Devil May Cry 4 to the iPhone. At the time of release, Nero was the only playable character, but after a new update Dante was added as a playable character. Although the plot for the most part is largely similar to the console version, Capcom has tweaked the story and added some minor differences to the overall plot, a large one being that Nero and Dante's stories have been split into two separate narratives rather than one continuous one.
