This 2002 release is a faithful but modernized remake of the classic arcade shooter, casting you as a pilot defending human colonies from the invading Manti bugs. Gameplay retains the core frantic, side-scrolling defense loop, but adds depth through six unique ships with distinct weapons and flight styles. A key feature is the progression system: rescuing captured humans prevents their mutation and earns credits used to upgrade your ship's weapons and shields. Beyond the action, this version includes video extras detailing the history of the original game.
The gameplay preserves the essential, fast-paced, side-scrolling shooter mechanics that defined the original. Players navigate a landscape, constantly maneuvering to shoot incoming enemies. However, this remake introduces substantial enhancements over its predecessor.
A key feature distinguishing this version is the roster of available spacecraft. Players can choose from six different ships, each possessing unique flight characteristics and specialized weaponry, adding a layer of strategic choice not present in the original single-ship experience.
Central to the experience is the urgent need to rescue captured humans. If the Manti successfully abduct a colonist, they begin transforming them into mutants, increasing the enemy's strength. Successfully retrieving these survivors and returning them to a designated safe landing zone not only prevents this escalation but also rewards the player with credits. These credits are vital, as they can be spent on purchasing upgraded weapons and improved shields for your chosen ship, providing a progression loop absent in the pure arcade version.
While the fundamental concept of defending against waves of aliens and rescuing people is faithfully maintained, this version significantly updates the presentation and depth. Visually, the game benefits from the graphical capabilities of the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube platforms, offering a more detailed and immersive environment compared to the original 1980s presentation.
The narrative structure is also expanded. The storyline follows rookie pilot Kyoto as they are dispatched on critical missions by the Battleship Memory, interacting with figures like Colonel Adams and Dr. Mudo to learn more about the Manti threat. This provides a context and progression absent in the original's endless arcade loop.
Beyond the core gameplay enhancements, this release includes supplementary material designed to appeal to fans of the franchise's history. Several video extras are included, detailing the historical perspective of the original game and offering insight into the making of this 2002 update.
This updated version of the classic shooter was released in 2002 for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo GameCube. A subsequent release also occurred on the Xbox 360.
As of the current information, there are no officially released downloadable content packs or expansions associated with this specific remake.

Released in conjunction with a 3D update of the classic arcade game on consoles, the Game Boy Advance version is also an update of the original, but retains its side-scrolling gameplay. The cartridge includes several variants of the game. The main mode is called "XGP". Its basics are the same as in the original: The player's spaceship flies left or right over a scrolling landscape that wraps around after a few screens. The goal is to destroy all invading aliens before they can capture the humans sitting on the ground. Besides updated graphics with various backgrounds and sprites for the enemies and humans, there are other differences as well: players can select from different ships, all with slightly different weapons and ratings for shields and speed. The XGP mode offers six different levels to complete. It can also be played by two players over the System Link. The cartridge also includes "Classic" mode, which is a port of the original arcade game. Finally, "XG" mode is the same gameplay-wise as Classic, but has been updated with graphics similar to the XGP mode.
