Dead or Alive is a foundational 3D fighting game, first released in arcades in 1996. In this main game, you engage in one-on-one martial arts combat hosted by the DOATEC World Combat Championship. The core loop centers on mastering strikes, kicks, and throws, distinguished by its unique counter system where strikes beat throws, and throws beat strikes, demanding constant anticipation. Ports later introduced new characters to this fast-paced arcade experience.
As a 3D fighting game, the experience focuses on intense, one-on-one combat utilizing a diverse roster of martial artists. The primary gameplay loop involves mastering a system built around three fundamental attack types: strikes, throws, and kicks. Success hinges on understanding the timing and application of these moves in relation to an opponent's actions.
A key feature distinguishing this title within the genre is its emphasis on a rock-paper-scissors style defense system. Attacks can be countered by specific defensive maneuvers: strikes can be beaten by holds (throws), while holds can be beaten by strikes or kicks. This creates a dynamic flow where players must constantly anticipate their opponent's next move to execute a successful counter or reversal.
The game delivers a fast-paced arcade atmosphere, characteristic of its era, focusing purely on competitive martial arts action. The initial release utilized specialized arcade hardware, which translated into smooth animations and detailed character models for the time.
As the main game entry, this title does not feature any downloadable content (DLCs) or expansions. The content available is what was included in the initial arcade release and subsequent console ports. Enhanced ports later introduced new characters to the roster.
The game first appeared on Arcade hardware. It was later ported to the Sega Saturn. An enhanced version was also released for the PlayStation, which later saw a backport to arcades under a different title.
The game's uniqueness stems from its reliance on the triangle-based counter system—strikes beat throws, and throws beat strikes—which demands a high degree of situational awareness and quick decision-making beyond standard combo execution. Furthermore, the environment design introduced elements that could be utilized during combat, adding another layer to the strategic depth.

Dead or Alive Ultimate is a compilation fighting game. The compilation contains the Sega Saturn version of Dead or Alive and an enhanced remake of Dead or Alive 2 which utilized the Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball graphics engine and offered Dead or Alive 3 game mechanics, new game content, online multiplayer capabilities and the inclusion of Hitomi as a playable character.

Dead or Alive ++ (Plus Plus) is an updated version of Dead or Alive released in 1998. It includes new characters, improved graphics, and unlockable costumes. The updated version also features remixed stage designs.

Exclusive to the PlayStation version of the game is two additional characters.
