As a Remaster, this 2021 release focuses exclusively on the single-player campaign of the classic first-person shooter, optimized for modern hardware. You utilize the versatile Nanosuit, strategically blending Cloak, Strength, Armor, and Speed abilities to navigate tactical combat scenarios within the overgrown, post-apocalyptic setting of the Liberty Dome. This version preserves the original gameplay while featuring updated high-fidelity textures, improved lighting, and enhanced performance across current platforms.
The central gameplay loop revolves around tactical engagement utilizing the highly versatile Nanosuit. This advanced combat gear provides players with four primary, switchable abilities that dictate approach and survival. These include Cloak for optical camouflage, allowing for stealth and infiltration; Armor mode for significantly increased damage resistance during direct firefights; Strength for enhanced melee impact and the ability to manipulate heavy environmental objects; and Speed for rapid traversal across the map.
Success in combat requires players to fluidly transition between these modes based on immediate threats and objectives. The game design encourages experimentation with verticality and environmental destruction inherent in the setting.
The primary focus of this release, developed by Saber Interactive and Crytek, is technical modernization. The remaster preserves the original single-player content entirely but significantly enhances its presentation across PlayStation 4, PC (Microsoft Windows), Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One platforms.
The graphical overhaul includes substantial improvements to fidelity. Expect updated high-quality textures, modernized lighting models that affect visibility and atmosphere, and improved rendering for environmental details and character models. Furthermore, the remaster targets higher resolutions and frame rates compatible with modern display standards, ensuring smoother performance than the original 2013 release.
The sound design has also been updated to match the visual enhancements, providing a more immersive auditory experience that complements the intense action sequences and the atmospheric tension of the Liberty Dome.
It is important to note that this version is a faithful technical recreation. No new story content, missions, or gameplay modes have been added. The structure, level design, and balance of the original Nanosuit abilities and weapons remain intact, ensuring the experience aligns closely with the source material.
This specific remastered package does not include any additional downloadable content (DLC) or separate expansions beyond the core single-player campaign that was present in the original release.
Violence mainly consists of shooting action between your own high-tech armour-clad team, other human soldiers, and technologically advanced cybernetic aliens. Human characters respond to violence in a realistic manner and blood effects are used. Although bodies remain in view, after human characters are defeated, there are no graphic wound details. Violence against alien characters can be more graphic. For example, when explosives are used against them, they explode into chunks. This game also contains use of strong language ('fuck'), as well as milder terms including 'bitch', 'bastard' and 'shit'. There is a scene in which a character aims a pistol at their own head and pulls the trigger. The scene is brief and ends when the trigger is pulled. There is no blood or gore. There is also a scene in which large piles of burning bodies are shown.
