As an action racing main game released in 1997, Carmageddon puts you behind the wheel of 23 unique crash mobiles across 30+ levels of motorized mayhem. The core gameplay loop involves aggressive driving where the objective is not just winning, but maximizing vehicular destruction against opponents and the environment, featuring visceral combat and the sounds of crushing metal. This title is distinguished by making demolition a primary metric for success.
The gameplay loop centers on navigating various courses while engaging in vehicular mayhem. Players select from a roster of 23 distinct "crash mobiles," ranging from powerful monster trucks to nimble dragsters, each offering a different approach to demolition derby-style racing. Success is measured not only by crossing the finish line first but also by the level of destruction achieved during the event.
The game features over 30 levels designed to facilitate intense motorized terror. A key mechanic involves utilizing your vehicle to plow through opposing racers and environmental obstacles. The focus is heavily skewed toward aggressive interaction rather than traditional clean racing lines. You take the wheel as the character Max Damage, aiming for vehicular dominance.
Unlike conventional racing games, this title elevates destruction to a primary scoring and objective metric. The environment is highly interactive, designed to be torn apart by the player's actions. This focus on vehicular combat and environmental annihilation sets it apart from standard circuit racers. Expect the soundtrack to be dominated by the sounds of crunching metal and skidding tires.
As a Main Game release, the core experience is self-contained. Currently, there are no officially released Downloadable Content (DLC) packs associated with this title. However, the original release did include one expansion pack, adding further content to the base game.
Players assume the role of Max Damage, taking control of various vehicles to compete in brutal, no-holds-barred competitions. The setting is one of motorized fury where the goal is often survival and dominance through aggressive driving tactics against a field of competitors across 30+ levels of hellish fury.

The German version of Carmageddon was the most censored version, with the pedestrians changed to robots which spilled black oil.

Due to being very controversial at the time, Carmageddon was censored in many countries, changing pedestrians for zombies with green blood. An official mod which changed the game back to its original state was later uploaded online by the developers.
