This action platformer, originally released in 2003, casts players as the famous Gauls, Asterix and Obelix, on a mission to reverse a massive injustice. The premise begins when the heroes return to their village to find all their companions captured by the Roman Empire, alongside the theft of their crucial magic potion that grants superhuman strength. Caesar has dispersed the villagers across the furthest territories of his domain, setting the stage for a large-scale rescue operation.
The central gameplay loop revolves around utilizing the distinct capabilities of the two protagonists. Players must strategically switch between Asterix and Obelix to navigate environments and overcome opposition, as progression often depends on leveraging each hero's unique skillset to solve puzzles and engage in combat scenarios.
Throughout the adventure, players will unlock and acquire powerful new combos and specialized attack moves, adding depth to the action sequences. The scope of the journey is substantial, taking players through six different countries comprising 47 distinct areas, totaling over 40 levels.
The gameplay experience is deliberately varied, moving beyond standard platforming action. While players frequently engage in large-scale brawls, battling hundreds of Romans at once, the adventure also incorporates segments requiring precise timing, such as riding and racing sequences. Furthermore, thoughtful puzzle-solving is integrated throughout the journey, ensuring a balance between action and mental engagement.
The game presents itself with vibrant colors and picturesque backgrounds designed to capture the spirit of the source material. This presentation is supported by exciting special effects accompanying the action and humorous animations reflecting the characters' personalities. The audio design complements the adventure with a diverse range of music, spanning styles from Roman marches to Egyptian themes, all supported by zany sound effects and good-humored voice acting.
