Action Man: Robot Atak, released in 2004, is a side-scrolling platformer and shooter where you control Action Man, Redwolf, and Flint to stop the evil Dr. X and his robot army on Island X. Gameplay involves platforming, jumping, and combat against robots and island creatures, utilizing each character's unique skills, like Flint's double jump or Action Man's discs. The 17 levels feature varied mechanics, including motorcycle rides and helicopter sequences, breaking up the standard action. The story centers on Action Force clearing their name after being framed for kidnapping a scientist needed to create a mind-control gas.
The gameplay loop centers on traversing the 17 levels, utilizing the unique skills of the three playable characters: Action Man, Redwolf, and Flint. While Action Man and Flint often begin levels relying on their fists, they can acquire various weapons, including enhanced guns and throwing discs (exclusive to Action Man). Redwolf relies primarily on his bow.
Character differentiation is key to progression:
Weapon power-ups are temporary but can significantly boost offensive capabilities. Players can earn extra lives by collecting 50 Action Man icons, and health power-ups are scattered throughout the stages. Checkpoints reset the player every few screens to aid progression.
Variety is introduced through several non-standard levels that break from the typical side-scrolling platforming structure. These specialized stages put the heroes in unique vehicles or gear:
The narrative kicks off with the kidnapping of Professor Moran, the world's leading toxins specialist, by the villain No-Face, who frames Action Man for the crime. No-Face intends to force Moran to create a mind-control gas. With Action Force branded as criminals, the team escapes and tracks the villains to Island X. There, they discover that No-Face is resurrecting Dr. X and plans to use Moran's gas to enslave the world's population. The mission culminates in Action Force infiltrating the island to thwart this global takeover plot.
