The Irregular Militia Forces (IMF) in Squad are finally getting their soul back. Offworld Industries has admitted that the shift toward making the IMF a Russian-proxy force was a misstep, and they are officially reversing course to restore the faction’s unique identity as a Western-surplus-equipped militia.
For long-time veterans, the IMF always felt best when it was a ragtag collection of Cold War-era gear and black-market hardware. Recent updates like v9.0 moved the needle too far toward modern Russian kits, stripping away the faction's flavor. The new plan focuses on reclaiming that "irregular" feel by reintroducing iconic weapons that defined the IMF's early days. The FN FAL, M4 Classic, and M16A2 are all slated for a return, replacing the more uniform AK-12 and T72A setups that made the militia feel like a budget version of the Russian Ground Forces.
The overhaul isn't just about small arms. The developers are planning to introduce the T64B Main Battle Tank to the IMF roster, providing a heavy armor option that fits their lore better than the current T72 variants. Additionally, players can expect a complete rework of the RKG-3 AT grenade logic and an upgraded model for the BM-21 Grad rocket artillery. These changes aim to give the IMF a distinct tactical niche that relies on punchy, older hardware rather than modern high-tech parity.
Community involvement is also taking center stage in this restoration. Offworld Industries has launched a survey for players to vote on a new faction flag, ensuring the player base has a direct hand in the IMF's rebranding. While these updates are currently work-in-progress without a firm release date, the commitment to undoing the unpopular "proxy" shift is a massive win for faction diversity and tactical realism.
