Starbreeze Studios is looking to shake up the flow of combat in Payday 3. The HEAT system introduces a visible bar that fills as you and your crew take down enemies during an active assault. Once that bar is topped off, the assault ends immediately, forcing the police into a regrouping phase. This gives players a direct, mechanical way to force a breather rather than just waiting out an invisible timer.
This is a significant change for high-level play. In the current meta, managing resources during endless-feeling waves can be a chore. The HEAT system rewards aggressive, efficient play by giving you control over the heist's tempo. If your crew is high on DPS, you can effectively "bully" the police into retreating faster, providing critical windows to move bags or reset drills without being under constant fire.
How to Participate and Provide Feedback
The playtest is running on a separate Steam branch, meaning you'll need to download a different version of the game to jump in. Keep in mind that progression is isolated—anything you unlock or earn in the HEAT playtest won't carry over to your main account. Starbreeze is specifically looking for feedback on three key areas:
- Usefulness: Does forcing a regroup actually help your strategy?
- Effort: Does it take too many (or too few) kills to trigger?
- Reward: Does it feel satisfying to "break" the assault?
The data gathered this weekend is slated to influence the upcoming 3.6 release and future major balance patches. If you've felt the assault phases in Payday 3 needed more player agency, this is your chance to help shape that evolution.
