This isn't a polished marketing demo. The developers are being transparent about the state of this build: it is rough, it is buggy, and its primary purpose is to break things. Specifically, this test is designed to stress the online infrastructure. If you played the original, you know that co-op was the definitive way to experience Aurai, but connectivity could occasionally be temperamental. This early technical test suggests a commitment to ensuring the sequel's multiplayer foundation is solid well before the 2026 launch.
What is in the Outward 2 Playtest?
While the focus is on technical stability, participants will get their first hands-on look at the world 50 years after the events of the first game. The test introduces the Symposium of Haboob and features Oliele, a character that veterans of the first game's lore will recognize. Seeing how the world has evolved—or devolved—half a century later adds significant narrative weight to what is otherwise a technical check.
The playtest is invitation-only. Players hoping to brave the new dangers can register for a chance to receive an invite. Selected participants will receive emails starting December 9th. Nine Dots is also hosting a Twitch live stream on December 8th to preview the build and manage expectations regarding the "rough" nature of the current version.
Will there be other opportunities to play?
If you miss this window, you likely won't have to wait until the full release. A larger, presumably more stable playtest is currently targeted for early 2026. For now, this December test is for those willing to endure crashes and bugs to help the developers stabilize the co-op experience.
