The first developer diary for By God Alone introduces a major new mechanic: Spiritual Fulfillment. This scale ranges from -100 to +100 and tracks how well your character actually lives up to their faith's expectations. Unlike Piety, which acts as a currency for external actions, Fulfillment is a personal measure of your ruler's soul. It creates a fascinating tension; a cynical ruler might have high Piety through strategic donations while feeling zero Spiritual Fulfillment, leading to new narrative dilemmas and character-driven consequences.
To support this, Paradox is revising how Tenets work. Instead of just being passive realm-wide buffs, over two dozen new Tenets (primarily focusing on Christian traditions) will now have personal effects. Characters can adopt Personal Tenets that align with their traits. If your brave knight follows a tenet of valor, they gain Fulfillment. If they act against it, they'll suffer the spiritual weight of their hypocrisy.
The expansion also addresses the often-clunky process of switching religions with the new Study Faith scheme. This Learning-based scheme allows you to immerse yourself in the doctrines of another faith before converting, making the transition smoother and more grounded in your character's journey rather than a sudden menu click. For those nearing the end of their reign, the Last Rites decision offers a way to secure the succession. By granting land or wealth to the Church or Holy Orders on your deathbed, you can leave behind modifiers that help your heir stabilize the realm during those precarious first years of a new rule.
